Understanding Skill Levels and Points

Craft pathways to proficiency through Skill levels and points

Updated this week

When creating a new Skill you'll encounter something we like to call Skill Levels. These are extra ways to inspire learners to Level Up , while also giving everyone a way to understand how well a learner has progressed.

Level Numbers

Each Skill will start at Level 0 to reflect that a learner hasn't yet used that Skill. As a learner plays games which use that Skill, its Level will increase in number, from 0 to 1, 1 to 2... You get the idea.

Level numbers can go as high or as low as you choose when you create your Skills.

How Levels Go Up

Each Level can be assigned a certain number of points when the Skill is created or edited. Once a learner manages to accumulate the specified number of points, they will achieve that Level!

How Points Are Earned

By completing Steps

When you create a Step, there's an option to include Skills in the Step. The points assigned to those Skills are then rewarded to learners who successfully complete the Step. As they add up, the learner will earn higher Levels in those Skills!

Note: once a learner has earned the maximum number of skill points available within a Step, they won't earn any more points for that Skill in future replays of that same Step!

Skill points accumulate over the course of a learner's learning journey through Skill Levels and graded Steps. They work together to Level Up learners, making their experience more immersive and rewarding.

In addition to being given grades and Happy Clients:

  • Steps award learners with points that go toward earning Skill Levels

  • Skill Levels are earned when their specified point values are met or exceeded

When you assign Skill points, you're deciding:

  • how many are needed for a learner to get to the next Skill Level

  • how many are awarded with each Step a learner completes

Assigning Skill Level Points

Points are assigned to Skills when you edit or create a Skill. You'll see something that looks like this:

Skill Level 1 and 2 Comparison of Points Needed and Badge vs No Badge

Learners will always start with 0 points for every Skill. To get them even more interested and invested in the learning process:

  • ASSIGN small point values for the first few Levels

  • INCREASE point values as Level numbers increase

It's good practice to keep the amounts reasonable and attainable.

To give you an idea...

Do:

  • Level 1 = 5 points

  • Level 2 = 15 points

  • Level 3 = 30 points

Don't:

  • Level 1 = 100 points

  • Level 2 = 500 points

Inspire learners to push forward by assigning lower numbers to the first few Levels, giving them a taste of the victories to come!

Step Points

When creating a Step that uses a particular Skill, choose to include that Skill. You can have as many or as few Skills associated with a single Step, the sky's the limit!

After you tag the Skill(s) that will be awarded points in a Step, a box will pop up where you will specify how many points that Skill will be given:

Step Wizard Skills Option with Skill and Number of Points Awarded for Skill

When assigning points, consider:

  • difficulty of the Step

  • points needed for Skill Levels

Let's say the Step is easy, and the learner needs 5 points to achieve Level 1 in that Skill.

Do:

  • assign a 5-point reward

Don't:

  • assign 0 points

  • assign 100 points as a reward

You don't have to match rewarded points with Level amounts. (Unless you want to, of course!)

We do recommend you do it for the first Step or two. This will Level Up the learner's Skill right away and get them even more excited for your Steps and Courses!

Only administrators can see, and change, the amount of points Skill Levels need and Steps have.

Learners don't need to see that stuff anyway. After all, they'll be busy getting rewarded with shiny new Badges and higher Level numbers they can show off their progress with!
